Since September 1983, the CUSB has offered two translation programs: The Honours Bachelor of Arts in Translation (120 credits) and The Certificate Program (30 credits).

During a meeting held on April 6, 1984, the Canadian Association of Schools of Translation (CAST) officially recognized the translation instruction offered at the CUSB and admitted the establishment as a voting member.

In December 1984,  the creation of a translation school at the CUSB was approved. This decision took into account the

specific nature of translation instruction, requiring, as it does, special training due to the professional objectives involved.

Since January 1989 the School of Translation of the CUSB has had its own laboratory, complete with a wide array of resource material and the computerized equipment needed by modern-day translators (terminological data banks, electronic dictionaries, etc.). The laboratory also has equipment for teaching a subtitling course and an introductory course in interpretation.

Since September 1993,  the programs offered at the School of Translation have been entirely updated to focus increasingly on the practical training of students.

Practical Training Approach

The School of Translation provides its students with practical and individualized training in small groups so that students, while pursuing their post-secondary studies, can become acquainted with the realities they will encounter in the professional world.

During the final two years at the CUSB, students may enrol in laboratory courses or in "on the job" training courses. These courses give them the opportunity to practice their future profession under conditions which closely resemble those they will encounter in the workplace. Other projects are also under study with a view to providing telework training courses to students enrolled in the Certificate Program on the Internet.

The School of Translation offers translation courses into French or English in numerous areas of specialisation: legal, literary, commercial and economic, medical, scientific and technical translation, translation in the social sciences, etc. The students accordingly have the opportunity to gain experience in various spheres of human endeavour.

The school also offers an introductory course in interpretation, which gives students the chance to become familiar with this unique type of translation and also to acquire some of the basic skills involved. The school also offers a course in subtitling for film and a course in translation service management.
