What is professional translation?

Translation is a professional activity, which means that it is an activity carried out in a commercial setting and is subject to the same regulations that apply to other professional corporations.

In Manitoba, the Association of Translators and Interpreters of Manitoba (ATIM) is the governing body responsible for overseeing rights and duties of translators as well as protecting public interest. Similar to other provincial associations (ATIA, ATINS, OTTIAQ, etc.), ATIM is affiliated with the Canadian Translators, Terminologists and Interpreters Council (CTTIC), in turn affiliated with the International Federation of Translators (FIT). CTTIC administers certification exams on a yearly basis for translators, interpreters and terminologists intended to guarantee the quality of services rendered by its members.

Being a professional translator requires competence, knowledge, experience, curiosity and open-mindedness. Translators must also comply with the profession's Code of Ethics. The Certificate in Translation is the first step towards becoming a translator. After their studies, translators must continually perfect their knowledge of the languages in wich they work while keeping abreast of the latest scientific, technological and literary innovations.

St. Jerome is the Patron Saint of translators (see photo above). Every year, on St. Jerome's Day, which is September 30, translators celebrate World Translation Day in memory of this renowned translator.
